Hi, and welcome to my portfolio! My name is Walton Li, and I’m a senior at Archbishop Mitty High School in San Jose, California. I have a strong passion for public health and biological science. I am committed to translating academic knowledge into real-world impact by driving innovation and applying theory to practice in the service of my community.
I was hit hard when watching my grandfather’s rapid decline from liver cancer, but what struck me more was his decision to ignore early red flags in his health. My future goal is to not only look into biological factors, but also to dismantle barriers that keep people from seeking the help they actually need. My time working at Stanford’s Asian Liver Center since 9th grade allowed me to reveal gaps in awareness and culture surrounding disease, an experience that has since solidified my desire for an interdisciplinary education.
My curiosity about pediatric health first took shape during independent research aimed at preventing hyperglycemia-induced growth impairment in children. That experience sparked a lasting interest in pediatric disorders, an area I’m excited to keep exploring. In conjunction with this project, I worked as a policy and research intern at Stanford’s Halpern-Felsher REACH Lab, where we worked on reducing substance use among adolescence and youth.
This has all been further supplemented by working at The First Tee. There, I was given the privilege to mentor children from underrepresented communities, as well as those with conditions such as ASD and ADHD. My experience in this position have greatly strengthened my desire to continue serving individuals from such backgrounds, as well as to pursue a future in pediatric medicine.
When I’m not working, I enjoy playing golf, a sport I started at the age of 6. Over the years, I’ve qualified for and competed in three international championships, and have received national and regional championship awards. Also, I was recently selected as one of 80 juniors from across the U.S. representing Silicon Valley to participate in the PURE Insurance Championship, where I competed alongside official PGA TOUR golf professionals.
