1. Integrity and Ethics

Coursework:
– Social Justice, English courses focused on various aspects of the human conditions, AP US History, AP World History,

Service:
– During my volunteer work at the First Tee, Police Activity League (PAL), and Follow Through Golf, I worked extensively with children from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, and health backgrounds. My golf coaching always emphasized the importance of integrity and ethics.

Reflections:
– My high school (AMHS) excels at teaching students how to achieve success ethically and with respect for all human beings. The courses I took helped me understand the importance of ethical behavior in all aspects of life. This knowledge has allowed me to better understand that everyone deserves to be treated with respect, regardless of their social status or health condition.

2. Reliability and Dependability

Coursework:
– Throughout high school, I attended every class prepared to participate. I reliably completed assignments on time. I was a dependable team member, always prepared for group projects.

Service:
– Reliability is essential when mentoring children. I made sure to give my undivided attention to my students at the First Tee and other organizations, so they knew I was there to help whenever needed.

Work / Activities:
– As a team leader for Team HBV San Jose and Follow Through Golf, I consistently kept my promises and stood by my beliefs. I also demonstrated dependability by being responsive to questions and communications.

Research:
– While working at the Stanford Halpern-Felsher REACH lab, I always completed my work on time and went above and beyond to exceed expectations. I also took the initiative to understand the broader context of my work and its impact on larger issues.

Reflections:
– I’m proud of my ability to be reliable and dependable. I like knowing that people can count on me to handle tasks professionally and efficiently.

3. Social, Interaction & Communication Skills

Coursework:
– My English courses involved intensive discussions and group work, which allowed me to interact with people from diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

Service:
– Volunteering at CityTeam, delivering groceries to senior apartments, gave me opportunities to talk to and listen to the needs of elders. I was able to communicate with people I wouldn’t usually interact with.

– While volunteering at the First Tee, leading groups of juniors, I was constantly challenged to answer questions from students. This experience sharpened my public speaking and problem-solving skills. It helped me develop my social skills and ability to express myself confidently in front of groups.

Work / Activities:
– As a team leader for Team HBV San Jose, I was responsible for holding meetings, initiating ideas, and inspiring team members to work on specific initiatives. Effective communication and social skills helped me positively influence the team.

– My internship at the Stanford REACH Lab allowed me to interact with interns and staff members of different ages and positions. Presenting to lab staff helped me gain confidence in sharing my ideas and perspectives with professionals in the field.

Reflections:
I’ve been fortunate to interact with people from diverse backgrounds and in various settings. The experiences have shaped my identity as an individual committed to bridging gaps in healthcare and the community, as well as refining my social and interpersonal skills through real-world situations. These interactions taught me the importance of catering care to individuals’ needs, and the importance of allowing their voices to be heard, in order to ensure their concerns are addressed.

4. Teamwork and Collaboration

Coursework:
– Laboratory science and English courses, which often involve group work, allow me to collaborate with classmates.

Service:
– While working at the First Tee, I collaborated with other volunteers and adult coaches to plan and manage activities effectively, ensuring a safe and productive learning environment for the kids.

Work / Activities:
– As the leader of Team HBV San Jose, a student-run hepatitis B awareness club, I hold frequent team meetings to foster teamwork and create social media accounts and websites to improve team communication. I emphasize the importance of teamwork by conducting brainstorming sessions for activities.

– As a member of my high school varsity golf team, communication and teamwork are essential both during the golf season and throughout the year. During the off season, I practice with teammates and encourage each other to improve our skills.

Reflections:
Whether in the classroom or outside of it, I’ve participated in numerous group activities and projects, from lab assignments to group presentations and sports. All of these experiences required teamwork to achieve successful outcomes. My coursework, research, and activities have encouraged me to work effectively both independently and in groups.

5. Resilience and Adaptability

Coursework:
– Challenging advanced courses

Service:
– While working with children with autism, I’ve had to be flexible and adapt to unexpected changes in mood.

– During my volunteer work at CityTeam, delivering groceries to under-resourced elders, I encountered situations where I was treated disrespectfully due to dissatisfaction with the delivered goods. Instead of being discouraged, I learned to empathize with their perspective and understand their needs.

Work/Activities:
– During golf competitions, I must quickly recover from mistakes and maintain confidence to continue playing. I’m able to adapt to unforeseen circumstances, such as weather conditions, sudden discomfort, or injuries that could potentially challenge my mental and physical abilities.

Reflections:
It’s not easy to bounce back from setbacks, especially when reality doesn’t meet expectations. I’m grateful for these experiences, as they’ve helped me develop resilience and adaptability in the face of challenges.
